新年快乐 (Xīnnián kuàilè)

"New Year Happiness!"

From the Event Team to all Haveners!

As many of you may know, today is the start of the Lunar New Year. We would like to invite all Haveners to come and celebrate with us in this spectacular event! The event will be divided into two sections so make sure you read through the topic! But first, a little background on the Lunar New Year:

The Lunar New Year has been around for centuries and became significant through the myths and traditions. It is also commonly known as, "Chinese New Year." due to its origin in China. Traditionally, the festival was a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. A family would have a variety of activities and foods, all symbolic and important in celebrating Lunar New Year. Some of these traditions included setting off fireworks to scare away evil spirits, decorating everything in red to bring in the year with good luck, and even cleaning to appease the Gods that are coming down from heaven!

The Lunar New Year is a calendar that is based on the lunar cycles, or the phases of the moon. The new year usually begins with the new moon around the end of January and lasts around 15 days until the full moon arrives with the Festival of Lanterns, which marks the end of the new year celebration.

Lunar New Year is celebrated in other Asian countries and territories, including Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mauritius, and the Philippines. The Lunar New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and its geographical neighbors. Although the holiday originated from China, the neighboring countries adapted and developed their own traditions over time. It is nice to note that although it is not a national holiday, other countries like to celebrate as well such as: America, Australia, Canada & United Kingdom!

Here are some Lunar New Year greeting from neighboring countries in case you're curious!

Chúc mừng năm mới - Vietnamese
Sa was dee pee mai - Thai
Selamat tahun Baru - Malaysian/Indonesian
Saehae bok mani badeuseyo - Korean
Manigong Bagong Taon - Philippine

The second portion is a drawing challenge for those who would like make artwork inspired by the Lunar New Year. You can participate in both sections or just one! Both sections will have its own reward as well! Please read the sections for further information.

兔年
2023 is the Year of the Rabbit

Longevity. Peace. Prosperity.

In a majority of Chinese folk legend, rabbit is the fourth of the Chinese zodiacs. According to legend, the Rabbit was proud (arrogant even) of its speed. He was neighbors with the Ox and always made fun of the Ox's slowness. One day, the Jade Emperor said the zodiac order would be decided by the order in which the animals arrived at his celebration. Rabbit set off at daybreak. But when he arrived, no other animals were in sight. Thinking that he would obviously be first, he went of to the side and rested. However, when he awoke, the other animals were already present. One of them being the Ox he had always looked down upon. (source: chinesenewyear.net)

People born in years of the Rabbit hold the qualities of vigilance, wit, quick-mindfulness, and ingeniousness. According to Chinese astrology Rabbits are said to be gentle, quiet, elegant, and alert. With additional qualities such as quick, skillful, kind, patient, and responsible all around. They are sometimes reluctant to reveal their minds to others and have a tendency to escape reality, but are always faithful to those around them. (source: chinahighlights.com)

To celebrate the Lunar New Year we have a special challenge for you! A drawing challenge! However it's a bit different this time around. For this portion of the event you are going to re-design a current oc and instead create a bunny-fied version of them! It could be your favorite oc, an oc you never created art for, etc. Any oc you are comfortable with creating a rabbit version of will work.

Additionally, you are more than welcome (but not required) to include your birth zodiac in the design, but the character you choose has to have some (if not most) features of a rabbit. The outfit doesn't necessarily have to be Lunar themed, but you can if you want it to be! We hope you will take up this challenge and celebrate the Lunar New Year in a creative way. Have a Happy Lunar New Year and may the year of the Rabbit be a good one!

 Everyone can participate!
You must include rabbit-like features on the oc of your choice.

Please put effort into the character design, we won't accept sketches/wips!

 Keep art SFW.

No copyrighted or licensed characters (ex. animal crossing, hello kitty, sailor moon, etc.). Your own ocs only!
You may change your entries anytime before the deadline.

Post your design in this topic, make sure you mention it is for the drawing section!
Credit any resources and/or references you use.
There is no size requirement, however the canvas shouldn't be so tiny that it is blurry and hard to identify.

Artwork created for this event is for you (personal use only) and is not to be sold elsewhere.
